Ohio has had a lot of great trial lawyers. Most memorable was a gentleman by the name of Clarence Darrow. He was born north of Warren, Ohio, in a town called Kinsman. He was a law director in Ashtabula, Ohio, and went on to fame in Chicago handling national cases. He practiced criminal law and a lot of labor law. He handled injury cases, but his most famous case was the Scopes Monkey Trial. In that case, the state of Tennessee had prosecuted a schoolteacher for teaching evolution—basic science. That case attracted national attention, and it became the center of several movies called Inherit the Wind. Clarence Darrow is still a hero of mine. When I’m prepping a case for trial, I think of Clarence Darrow and the difficult cases he took on—because every case is a difficult case, but every client is important. And I think about that when I represent my clients and prepare their cases for trial.
