Recently, I met with a client, and their brother was there also. The family had a significant loss, and this brother said to me, ‘We don’t want to pay a lawyer. It’s too expensive. We can do it ourselves.’ And I say, maybe—but you’re not well advised to do that. The insurance company has resources. Their team is all professionals. I’ve known many insurance professionals—they’re sometimes nice people—but they’re constrained by the policies of the insurance company. Often, any settlement is dictated by a computer. These people are trained professionals. They know how to evaluate the case. You could give a recorded statement that would help them immensely. You could give them information that just helps their case, and you wouldn’t know it. Can you handle it yourself? You would be ill-advised to try to settle a significant injury case without the help of a lawyer. And it is help, because these cases can be settled in six months—or they could take six years. You might have to go to court, and you’re not going to be able to do that on your own. I know it’s inconvenient. You have to go to court. You have to give depositions. It’s something that no one wants to do, but sometimes you get forced into it. You don’t want to be in a courtroom. You don’t want to be in an accident. But you’re going to need a lawyer if you’re going to get a good result.
