Motorcycle Accidents

PDF Print

The risk of death or serious injury for motorcycle riders is much higher than those for individuals operating motor vehicles and trucks. Passenger vehicles and trucks are bigger and more powerful than motorcycles. Additionally, drivers of motor vehicles and trucks have many distractions including navigation systems, iPods, cell phones, and text messaging. This causes a greater risk for motorcycle riders.

MotorcycleThe Gervelis Law Firm handles motorcycle accidents and understands the unique concerns for riders. Motorcycle riders are in a unique position on the road. They enjoy the freedoms that come with their chosen form of transportation, but they are also left exposed to dangers not met by automobile and truck drivers. The lack of any substantial protective barriers between a motorcycle and the road, as well as the difficulty that other motorists may have in anticipating and seeing a motorcycle, leaves riders prone to serious injury in the event of an accident. Many car and truck drivers don't pay enough attention to motorcyclists causing serious accidents. Most riders would over brake and skid the rear wheel causing the motorcycle to slide out from underneath them, often forcing the rider to lay the motorcycle down to avoid colliding with another motor vehicle or truck.

During an accident, a motorcyclist is at risk of severe injuries and death, with many being thrown from their vehicles on impact. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), "in 2006, motorcyclists were about 35 times more likely than passenger car occupants to die in a motor vehicle traffic crash and 8 times more likely to be injured." Additionally, the NHTSA states "among the fatalities in two-vehicle crashes involving motorcycles and passenger vehicles, 98% of the fatalities were motorcycle riders and only 2% of the fatalities were passenger vehicle occupants." In 2004, there were 1,803 two-vehicle fatal crashes involving motorcycles and another vehicle. (NHTSA)

BicycleBicycle Accidents

Just like motorcycle accidents, bicycle riders have a greater risk of injury and death than car or truck drivers. Bicyclists have little protection when a car or truck crashes into them. Careless drivers often just do not see a bicyclist on the road. Street Smarts by John Allen is a concise booklet that summarizes what cyclists should know. The booklet was issued by the Ohio Department of Public Safety as Ohio Bicycling Street Smarts. Please visit http://www.bikexprt.com/streetsmarts/usa/index.htm to obtain additional information.
